Piraeus posted a new record for the number of cruise passengers in 2023 with a further record predicted for 2024.

According to new provisional data, Greece’s busiest port notched up a historic high in 2023 for the total number of cruise passengers, serving approximately 1.5m, compared with 880,000 in 2022.

Last year also saw a record number of passengers received through homeport operations, amounting to approximately 800,000, compared with 380,000 in 2022.

Of Piraeus’ 760 cruise calls in 2023, 525 involved homeport operations.

1,000+ calls expected

Piraeus has pre-bookings for 1,042 cruise calls in 2024, with a new record anticipated for the volume of homeporting operations, estimated to reach 800 calls.

Onwards and upwards

Chairman of Piraeus Port Authority, Yu Zenggang, expressed satisfaction with the upward trajectory, describing it as one of PPA’s key goals. He said cruising has advantages for multiple entities – for the local community, local authorities and Attica, as well as the country in general.
