PortMiami welcomed Explora Journeys' first call on Friday with a ceremony aboard Explora I.

'Miami is a paramount destination and important gateway to the Caribbean for ocean travel and it is a privilege to showcase our new ship and immersive journeys to this market,' Explora Journeys CEO Michael Ungerer said.

Crest exchange

The crest exchange was attended by Ungerer, Explora I Capt. Diego Michelozzi, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Hydi Webb, PortMiami director and CEO, among others.

'As we continue to expand our operations and partnerships, we look forward to cruise activity growth with Explora Journeys, which will benefit all of our passengers,' Webb said.

Caribbean and Central America

After Miami, Explora I continued to San Juan, Puerto Rico. From November through March, the ship will sail the Caribbean and Central America, calling at ports such as Samana (Dominican Republic), Antigua and Barbuda, Grand Turk, Cartagena, Saint Barthélemy and the Grenadines, before heading to the US West Coast.

Explora I entered service in July and was officially named Oct. 12 in New York City.
