Port of Akureyri signed an agreement with Eyjarfjordur Forestry Association to plant 2,000 trees locally every cruise season starting this year
Starting summer 2017, Port of Akureyri will contribute directly to Iceland's environmentally conscious efforts with a tree-planting programme designed to offset carbon emissions from visiting cruise ships and passengers.

To contribute to the fulfilment of the Paris Agreement, Port of Akureyri has signed an agreement with Eyjarfjordur Forestry Association to plant 2,000 trees locally every cruise season from this year.

Passengers can also contribute directly to the cause by donating €2.00 and have a tree planted by the Forestry Association in their name.

Iceland has a reputation for being an environmentally conscious country; with about 85% of total primary energy supply being derived from domestically produced renewable energy sources - the world’s highest share of renewable energy in any national energy budget.
