P&O Cruises and The Tidal Rum have formed an exclusive partnership that will create a bespoke rum for Arvia’s Caribbean sailings, with its maiden production carried out from the onboard distillery.

The LNG-powered Arvia follows Iona in having a distillery at sea.

‘We are so delighted that following Iona’s onboard gin distillery we are, once again, innovating with this first rum distillery at sea on Arvia which will be so fitting in the Caribbean sunshine,’ expressed Paul Ludlow, president, P&O Cruises.

‘The Tidal Rum will be the perfect drink to cool down in the Caribbean heat while enjoying the ship’s views of the ocean, seashore and surrounding destinations, or to give as a souvenir for friends and family when they arrive home.’

Created onboard the vessel

The rum’s maiden production will take place in Anderson’s Bar and will be available to passengers neat or mixed in cocktails.

Following the drink’s launch, The Tidal Rum will recreate the recipe and bottle for sharing with passengers across the P&O Cruises fleet.

Flavours from the Caribbean and British Isles

Created by Jersey-based founders of Shorts Boy Distillery, Ben Clyde-Smith and Harry Coulthard, The Tidal Rum is inspired and influenced by the sea and shore. It comes from a blend of Caribbean cask-aged rums from Trinidad, Jamaica, Barbados and the Dominican Republic plus an infusion of lightly oak smoked Pepper Dulse – a wild seaweed known as ‘the truffle of the sea’ found on Jersey’s coastline at low tide that brings a salted caramel flavour.

Explained Harry Coulthard, founder and director, The Tidal Rum, ‘With our new rum, we wanted to bring together the finest rums of the Caribbean with the fresh notes of coastal botanicals from the shores of Britain’s islands…’

The largest ship to sail from Barbados

Arvia joins the P&O Cruises fleet in December with a maiden voyage to the Canary Islands, followed by a winter season in the Caribbean.

According to a P&O Cruises spokesperson it will be the largest ship to sail from its homeport of Barbados, from where it will commence seven- to 22-night itineraries which can include an overnight stay in Barbados and an extended call to Antigua.
