Myra Shacklady RIP - a career in shipping which started in 1976
Ports of Jersey announced the sudden passing last weekend of Myra Shacklady, former commercial director for Jersey Harbours.

Shacklady was much respected among the business world, both locally across the island and further afield, especially within the maritime and cruise communities.

Shipping career over four decades

Her career in shipping began in 1976, when she joined P&O as a management graduate and spent 15 years in operations and marketing before moving to Stena Line, where for five years she was port manager for the UK-France ferry operation.  Shacklady then worked for Sun Cruises as marine operations manager joining in 1996.

She moved into the port’s sector, including a stint as commercial director at Milford Haven Port Authority, before being appointed as director of business development at Jersey Harbours in 2007, going on to become commercial director of the Ports of Jersey Group.

Ports of Jersey successes

During her 12-years working with Ports of Jersey she achieved many successes, including on the aviation front,  heading up route development initiatives, and introducing the Cruise Jersey programme.

Her lasting legacy will be the annual Barclays Jersey Boat Show, which she founded in 2007 and which continues to this day, conveyed an internal notice on Shacklady's passing, issued by Ports of Jersey.

Despite retiring from Ports of Jersey in September 2019, Shacklady continued to play an active role in supporting the Boat Show and as recently as a few days prior to her passing  was actively involved in the planning for the 2022 show, which will take place in June.

Cruise Britain tribute

Kate O’Hara, chair of Cruise Britain reflected that Shacklady, who was a founder member of Cruise Britain,  ‘was a real character and always had lots of energy.

‘Myra was one of the original directors and served on our steering group during many of the formative years. She had fantastic experience both from a cruise line perspective and a port perspective that helped so many so generously,’ shared O’Hara.

‘She will be greatly missed by all who knew her,’ O'Hara added.
