Norwegian Gem was to begin weeklong itineraries from La Romana Aug. 15.

This closely follows NCL's decision to drop cruises from Montego Bay, Jamaica, that also were to start in August.

Maximizing operational fleet and active crew

'Launching and crewing our vessels requires approximately 90 days. At this time, we are doing our best to maximize our operational fleet and active crew to deliver on cruise vacations in destinations our guests value the most,' NCL said in explaining the changes.

The line recently announced Alaska cruises starting in early August, while Greece sailings are planned from late July.
