It will mark the beginning of the cruise line’s three-year partnership with the Mo’orea-based organisation which begins this month.
Coral Gardeners aims to save coral reefs through restoration, awareness activities and innovative solutions. It works to grow, plant and monitor thousands of heat-resilient corals with the goal of bringing life back to the ocean.
Coral adoption through to 2024
Passengers sailing French Polynesia through the remainder of the year will receive a card in their cabin alerting them to the adoption of coral in their name. In 2023 and 2024, each passenger booked to visit the islands will be presented with the option to adopt a coral for a donation of $35 per person, with unique coral adoption cards placed in the cabins of those participating.
Decades of sailing the islands
This year marks Windstar’s 35th anniversary of sailing French Polynesia, which it claims is the longest of any operator in the region. It is also the only destination where the cruise line sails year-round.
Christopher Prelog, president, Windstar Cruises, said, ‘This new partnership is a wonderful way for us to celebrate Tahiti during our 35th anniversary season, but more importantly, to make a positive impact for the future of these incredible islands.’
Confident that the majority of passengers will choose to donate to help save the reef, he added, ‘We’ve been focused on reducing our carbon footprint via updating our fleet’s engines and operations, and this next step in climate action at sea is to partner with Coral Gardeners to protect the environment in French Polynesia and beyond.’
With two ships operating in French Polynesia throughout October, the line has been celebrating its 35th season this month with special events, integration with local dignitaries and artists, and a heightened infusion of local culture both onboard and ashore.
