Steve Lloyd has announced plans to retire as ceo of Cruiseco, a leading consortium of cruise specialist travel agencies, on his 65th birthday in August.

However, Lloyd said he will be available after that date ‘if certain areas require my assistance.’

Meantime, Cruiseco has advertised for his replacement, saying that the successful applicant ‘must have senior overall management experience in a travel organisation, including proven commercial acumen, the ability to develop creative product initiatives and the capability to drive a performance culture.'

In 2000 when Adelaide-based Phil Hoffmann and Melbourne-based Kevin Dale founded Cruiseco they appointed Lloyd to run the ‘highly personalised service for select agencies.’ They had a startup membership of 20.

A former Shaw Savill purser who started his career as a cadet with Royal Mail, Lloyd was gm of the Pacific and International Travel Company at the time and had worked for a number of travel organisations, including Amex and Adventure World, since coming to Australia in 1973.

When he joined Cruiseco he said it was going to be more like a private club than an industry association.

‘We do not actively recruit,’ he said. ‘We will only admit serious cruise sellers and this is reflected in our dealings with the cruise lines.’

Over the years Cruiseco has become a major charterer of ships and its annual conferences have attracted a veritable who’s who of global cruise industry executives, including Royal Caribbean’s Adam Goldstein, Crystal Cruises’ Edie Rodriguez, Azamara Club Cruises' Larry Pimentel and Oceania Cruises' co-founder Joe Watters.

Today Cruiseco, which is based in Sydney, distributes nearly 60 cruise brands to 300 member agencies in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.
