Fincantieri’s Vard firms Ponant newbuilds for Paul Gauguin

RENDERING: STIRLING DESIGN INTERNATIONAL Ponant Explorer for Paul Gauguin.jpg
The approximately 11,000gt ships will carry about 230 passengers and operate year-round in the South Pacific
Fincantieri’s Vard subdsidiary has firmed a contract with Ponant for a pair of next-generation newbuilds to operate for Paul Gauguin Cruises.

The approximately  €300m order was first reported here in November.

Evolution of Ponant's Explorers class

The two ships, both due for delivery in 2022, represent an evolution of Ponant’s Explorers series. They will measure approximately 11,000gt with capacity for about 230 passengers.

The pair will sail in the South Pacific year-round, joining the 332-passenger Paul Gauguin.

Extensive battery package

This hybrid electric duo will have what Fincantieri called ‘the most extensive battery package application in the market,’ allowing smokeless operation at anchor, in ports and in environmentally sensitive areas.

Energy optimization, noise and waste reduction

Their design is guided by objectives including energy optimization to ensure minimal fuel consumption via hydrodynamic optimization of the hull, more energy-efficient equipment and an innovative energy recovery system. Other objectives include the reduction of underwater noise and improved waste treatment with the ‘Cleanship Super’ certification from classification society Bureau Veritas.
