Holland America Line named Werner Timmers, a captain with nearly 40 years sailing for the company, as master of the new Rotterdam.

The ship is scheduled to enter service in July.

Timmers joined HAL in 1984 and has worked on the brand's classes of ship. He most recently commanded Koningsdam.

To Marghera

The captain will sign on in the coming months for Rotterdam's sea trials and then relocate to Fincantieri's Marghera yard to oversee the finishing touches before delivery.

HAL President Gus Antorcha called Timmers one of the longest-serving officers in the fleet with a wealth of experience, adding: 'His years of seamanship and hospitability with both guests and crew will continue to create a culture on board that promotes excellence in service and a passion for travel.'

From intern to captain

After joining Holland America as an intern, Timmers worked his way up the ranks to captain, which he achieved in 1996. Besides Koningsdam, he has been master of Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Ryndam, Zaandam and Zuiderdam.

Timmers called his appointment a highlight of a career filled with many wonderful milestones.

He grew up in Roosendaal, Netherlands, choosing a career at sea in his final year of high school after hearing a seafarer tell tales of adventure during career day. After graduating from the Nautical Academy in Vlissingen with a degree in nautical sciences, he obtained a second degree in marine engineering and rejoined HAL as a fourth officer.

When not at sea, Timmers lives with his wife Sherron and their two children in Mount Dora, Florida.
