The Port of Tarragona is expecting to receive 58 cruise calls and 118,000 passengers by mid-December - a solid increase on 2022 figures.

The MedCruise member port began the season April 6 with Silversea Cruises’ Silver Moon, as it made its first-ever voyage to the Spanish city from Palma de Mallorca en route to Barcelona. It was received at Balears Wharf, which Tarragona aims to equip with shore power and a new terminal meeting sustainable criteria.

A welcome ceremony was organised by Tarragona Port Authority and its port operations director, Núria Obiols, presented a commemorative plaque to the ship’s captain.

The season will close one month later than last year when 34 calls and 60,391 passengers were documented.

Tarragona Institutional Cruise Committee

The latest stats emerge following a meeting by the Tarragona Institutional Cruise Committee at the port's HQ yesterday. The institutional and business representatives who make up the membership of the Institutional Cruise Board met to analyse the beginning of the 2023 season and prospects for the rest of the year.

'Far from' the number of cruise ships received by some ports in the region

A spokesperson for the committee described the statistics as ‘close to the best pre-pandemic figures’ at the port and ‘a sign of the sector's recovery.’ However, they noted that the quantity of calls remained ‘far from’ those recorded by some other Mediterranean ports.

Tarragona to host 2024 MedCruise General Assembly

The committee also discussed matters relating to the organisation of MedCruise’s 2025 General Assembly taking place in Tarragona in May 2024. It will be attended by more than 200 delegates from across the Mediterranean sharing knowledge and best practices.
